Our longer term aspirations, such as great literature, even great erotic literature, were higher, longer term goals, but our short term goals were quite modest. It wasn't so much build it and they will come; it was more like build it and they will get excited and when they do, maybe we will all come.
What we have found, is quite rewarding and very interesting. We are being told by a growing list of advertisers, media and marketing executives, and even John Q enlightened public, that our publication has struck a nerve with them and with enough of their associates and friends that charging our readers anything at all for access to will simply cost us money in the future. We are being told, basically, accelerate the positives, get the readership you need and deserve and let the money come from advertising. Give your magazine away and it will go viral, they tell us. We agreed it is a virus we would like to catch!
We patiently explained to these advocates that, while we fervently believe in what we are doing we have always had in mind that this might be a "for profit" Venture someday. We tried to get across the idea that 18 hour workdays and a shoestring budget does not allow for either major reinvestment in a growing concern like ours or build a profit base large enough to sop up the continuing flow of red ink that we seem to currently be trying to stem by using $100 bills as a blotter.
